We aim to establish a creative hub dedicated to the research and development of natural materials, tools, and techniques—bringing together craftspeople from Japan and around the world to explore new possibilities at the intersection of tradition and innovation.
At its core, this project pursues three interconnected goals:
 Regional revitalisation through the use of local resources
 Preservation and continuation of Japan’s craft traditions
 Research and development of natural materials and tools

Why This Project

現在、日本の伝統工芸やモノづくりは大きな転換点を迎えています。
職人の高齢化、後継者不足、そして産業構造の変化により多くの技術や文化が失われつつあります。

私たちは多くの職人との対話を重ねる中で、ある共通課題に気づきました。それは原材料や道具の不足です。

良い作品を作るためには、品質の高い素材と理にかなった道具が不可欠です。

例えば木版画では、手漉きの上質な和紙がなければ、あの繊細な表現は生まれません。しかし、和紙職人の高齢化、楮など原材料農家の減少、道具職人の減少など、ものづくりの土台となる部分が急速に失われています。

私たちは志を同じくする仲間とともに、この状況を改善したいと考えました。

Traditional Japanese craftsmanship stands at a critical juncture. Ageing artisans, a lack of successors, and shifts in industrial structures are placing many techniques and cultural practices at risk of disappearing.
Through ongoing dialogue with craftspeople, we have identified a fundamental and recurring issue: the growing scarcity of raw materials and specialised tools. High-quality craftsmanship depends on these foundations. For example, in woodblock printing, the absence of finely made washi paper directly limits the level of expression that can be achieved.
Yet these essential resources are themselves under threat—from declining numbers of washi producers and toolmakers to the reduced cultivation of key raw materials such as kōzo (paper mulberry). Addressing this issue is central to sustaining craft culture.
This project is a response to that need.

Concept

私たちはまず、自分たちの強みである印刷技術から取り組みを始めます。

木版画や活版印刷などの伝統技術を基盤にしながら、シルクスクリーンや3Dプリンティングなどの新しい技術も取り入れます。そして支持体となる素材には、主に自然素材を使用します。

和紙、木、繊維、植物などの素材を研究し、素材の生産、開発、研究を行う拠点をつくります。

この取り組みを通して、徳島県那賀町を「自然素材と工芸の研究拠点」として世界に発信していきます。

Our starting point is printing. Building on traditional techniques such as woodblock and letterpress, we will integrate contemporary methods including screen printing and 3D printing.
Alongside this, we will prioritise the use of natural materials—researching and developing resources such as washi, timber, plant fibres, and pigments. By combining material research with production and practice, we aim to establish a base for experimentation, collaboration, and innovation.
Through this initiative, we seek to position Naka Town in Tokushima Prefecture as an international hub for the study and advancement of natural materials and craft.

地方創生

現在、日本では少子高齢化や都市一極集中が進み、地方の過疎化や人材不足が深刻化しています。

地方創生を実現するためには、その地域の資源を活かし、外から人が集まる仕組みをつくることが重要だと私たちは考えています。

DEKOBOKO PRESSがある徳島県那賀町には、都市にはない豊かな自然環境、文化、風土があります。

しかし、地元に住んでいるとその価値に気づきにくいこともあります。

私たちはこの土地の魅力を再発見し、国内外のクラフトマンが集い、学び、制作する場所をつくることで、地域に新しい文化と経済の循環を生み出したいと考えています。

Rural Japan faces ongoing challenges, including population decline, ageing communities, and the concentration of opportunity in urban centres. Sustainable revitalisation requires both the effective use of local resources and the creation of opportunities that attract people from beyond the region.
Naka Town in Tokushima Prefecture, home to Dekoboko Press, offers a rich natural environment and distinct cultural identity. However, such strengths are often under-recognised locally. This project aims to reframe these assets by creating a space where craftspeople from Japan and abroad can gather, collaborate, and produce new work.
In doing so, we hope to foster a cycle of cultural and economic activity that reconnects the region with a broader creative community.

日本の工芸文化継承

日本には長い歴史の中で育まれてきた、多くの工芸文化があります。
木版画、染織、陶芸、漆芸、金工など、地域ごとに独自の技術や美意識が受け継がれてきました。

しかし現在、多くの工芸分野で職人の高齢化や後継者不足が進み、技術の継承が難しくなっています。

工芸の価値は、単に「モノ」を作ることだけではありません。そこには長い年月をかけて磨かれてきた知恵や技術、そして自然と共に生きてきた文化が詰まっています。

私たちは国内外のクラフトマンやアーティストが集まり、学び、交流しながら制作できる場所をつくることで、工芸文化を次の世代へとつないでいきたいと考えています。

伝統を守るだけでなく、現代の技術や感性と融合させることで、新しい工芸の可能性を生み出していきます。

Japan’s craft traditions—ranging from printing and textiles to ceramics, lacquerware, and metalwork—embody generations of accumulated knowledge and refined technique. Today, however, many of these traditions face discontinuity due to a shortage of successors.
Craft is not only about producing objects; it represents ways of thinking, making, and living in relation to nature. Preserving this culture requires more than conservation—it requires active transmission and renewal.
By creating an environment for learning, exchange, and collaboration, this project aims to support both the continuation of traditional skills and their evolution through engagement with contemporary practices.

自然素材生産、開発

良いものづくりには、良い素材と道具が欠かせません。

しかし現在、多くの工芸分野で原材料や道具の入手が難しくなっています。

例えば木版画では、和紙、版木、顔料、刷毛など、さまざまな素材や道具が必要です。それらは長い時間をかけて改良されてきたものであり、工芸の品質を支える重要な要素です。しかし、和紙職人や原材料農家、道具職人の減少により、ものづくりの基盤そのものが失われつつあります。

私たちは自然素材を中心とした材料の研究や開発を行い、持続可能なものづくりの環境を整えていきたいと考えています。

和紙や植物繊維、木材などの自然素材を研究し、素材の可能性を探るとともに、工芸に必要な材料や道具の未来をつくる取り組みを行っていきます。

The future of craftsmanship depends on the sustainability of its materials and tools. Across many fields, these are becoming increasingly difficult to source, threatening the viability of the crafts themselves.
We will focus on researching and developing natural materials—including washi, plant fibres, and wood—while also supporting the ecosystems of production that sustain them. This includes engagement with material producers, toolmakers, and agricultural processes.
Our goal is to build a resilient foundation for craftsmanship: one that not only preserves existing practices but enables new forms of making grounded in high-quality, sustainable materials.

Ultimately, this project seeks to create more than a production space. It aims to establish a living, evolving platform where materials, techniques, and people come together—ensuring that craft traditions are not only preserved, but reimagined for the futur
